How Should Athletes Train?
by Yuri in Train Like a Pro
Should athletes train like the everyday person looking to burn fat or build muscle? Or should follow a more specific type of training plan that is specific to their sport.
I think the answer is pretty obvious but are still a lot of intricacies that need attending to.
For instance, one of my youtube viewers recently asked me the following question:
“Dear Yuri, I used to spend a lot of time in the gym preparing for the upcoming volleyball season but I found that the programs they were giving me required a lot of time and mainly gave me bulk and did not increase my volleyball functionality.
So I started looking around for other methods and started doing a lot more core exercises using bosuball, TRX ect instead of just weight machines. This is also how I stumbled across your youtube channel. With you being a professional athlete and your videos just making sense I keep following you.
So when I saw you are doing a series Ask Yuri I thought I would take my chance in asking you a few things involving training tot prepare for a volleyball season. The season ends in April and starts again in September to give you an idea of the timeframe. I do continue to play beach volleyball 2-3 times a week.
My questions are the following:
1.Do is still need to do extra cardio and if so hiit or long duration?
2.When I used to go to the gym they always said you need too train in cycles example 4 weeks 3×12 reps light weights then 4 weeks 3×8 heavier weight and then 4 weeks pyramid 8-6-4 reps. Is this necessary? If so why? Should I keep doing this?
3.When should I start and how many times a week should I do plyometrics?
Thanks a bundle in advance!”
