Visualize Your Workouts

by in Mindset

I’ve probably done over 10,000 workouts over the last 15 years or so.

And the one thing I can say is that some workouts really suck while others reinforce exactly why I love to exercise.

I was thinking about that this morning.

Why is it that some workouts are amazing while in others I just want to get out of the gym all together?

Well, I think there’s a few different reasons but one that sticks out for me is the notion of visualizing the workout.

What Do I Mean?

By visualizing your workout, I mean getting a mental picture of exactly what you’re going to be doing during your session. You should have already written out your workout plan or be following one that’s created for you (ie. Fitter U Fitness) – that’s the first step.

I find that when I know exactly which exercises I’ll be doing and how many reps and sets, I get reassured that my workout is going to be a good one.

Once I can “see” what I want my workout to look like, it becomes that much easier to make it a reality.

Doesn’t that sound familiar?

I’m sure you’ve heard of the power of visualization for achieving your goals, right?

Well, this is no different. Visualize your workout in its entirety, then at each exercise take a second or two before starting, close your eyes, and see and feel your body performing each rep with ease and perfect form.

I can’t tell you how powerful this mental technique really is. You just have to try it yourself.

One of the cool things about visualization is that when you can mentally see and believe yourself lifting a certain weight or executing a certain exercise, the actual physical execution becomes an automatic response.

I do this a lot with my heavier lifts such squats, deadlifts, and any olympic lifts.

If I’ve chosen a significant amount of weight that only allows a few reps, I need to be 100% focused and ready for each lift. So I stand by the bar, visualize myself going through each rep perfectly, and then I’m ready.

It makes such a difference!

Give it a shot and let me know your thoughts.
