Luck Comes From Work Hard

Last night, our men’s soccer team (University of Toronto) narrowly defeated our crosstown rivals, Ryerson University.

In all honesty, even though we’re sitting in 1st place, undefeated in seven games with the best offensive and defensive record in the country, we were very lucky to have won the game.

We came out flat without much desire to really win. We were fortunate that Ryerson didn’t capitalize on many of the mistakes that we were making.

However, we played a much better second half and with just 4 minutes to go in the game we were awarded a penalty kick after one of their defenders handled the ball in the box.

It wasn’t a blatant hand ball, but hey… we’ll take it. Our captain stepped up and slotted it home for  a 1-0 win!

That win was massive for us (and devastating for Ryerson) as it boosted us further away from our competition.

Although we weren’t completely delighted with how we played there is something to be said being lucky.

Many people view luck differently but for me I believe that we create our own luck through hard work and being good at what we do.

Not to say that any other teams haven’t been working hard but our team’s relentless hard work in training (and in games) definitely showed last night.

Sometimes, the good are lucky.

I think the biggest reason we got lucky in last night’s game was that we never gave up. I have beaten the concept of never giving up into our team’s psyche and it has shown in numerous games where we have found a way to somehow pull off the win.

The same goes for life. By persistently trying and trying and trying and trying, eventhough nothing may seem to be working, eventually something does.

It’s just a matter of correcting course and making adjustments along the way. If something doesn’t work, try it again from a different angle. Always be readjusting and refining until you find what works.

Sure you may call that luck but I just think it’s an unwillingness to give up or accept defeat.

Remember, the only time you fail is when you give up or quit.

So whatever goals you’re working towards, whether it be weight loss or anything else, always bear in mind that eventually the breakthrough will happen – as long as you keep trying.

P.S. If you’re interested in reading the game report from last night’s game you can do so here.
