U of T Soccer Pre-Game Warm-up

This past Tuesday our men’s soccer team at the University of Toronto (where I’m the assistant coach) was invited to play Toronto FC – Toronto’s professional soccer team that plays in the MLS.
Obviously our guys were unbelievably excited as this was a chance to play against some of the biggest names in the business. Guys they would normally watch on TV or in the stands were now going toe to toe with them.Â
The only drawback was that our guys have been off for the last 6 weeks because of exams and the fact that our official off-season ended in mid-april. So needless to say, they were a bit out of shape. But who cares! Â The experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity for them. Actually that’s not quite true since we’ll be playing them again next Tuesday and perhaps a few more times toward the end of the summer.

Ok, this is little dodgy but behind Jim Brennan (being interviewed) you’ll see our boys warming up. You need to look real close but we’re there in the background running a series of speed ladder and agility drills before moving into some small-sided ball possession.
Normally, our pre-game warm-up consists of 5 minutes of light jogging with numerous dynamic movements such as lunge walks, high knees, cariocas, etc…
They then join me in the speed ladders to “awaken” the nervous system by performing about 10 minutes of quickness, agility, and foot speed drills. Â During this time, we progressively get them to work and accelerate at faster speeds (closer to game pace). Â
And then finally, the guys finish up with about 15 minutes of small sided possession games to get their touches and foot work sharp for the game.
Again here’s the link to see a snippet of our warm-up.
