Ab Workouts with the Stability Ball

Posted on 08. Aug, 2009 by yuri in Workouts

Want a flat stomach or six pack abs? Well, aside from doing more full body workouts to help you burn fat and get lean, using the stability ball for your ab workouts can be a big help.

I like the stability ball for the following 3 reasons:

1. It provides an unstable surface, which inevitably recruits more muscle to activate to stabilize your body and perform the required ab exercises.

2. Allows for greater range of motion – if you’re doing crunches. Performing ab crunches on the ball allows for a great stretch of the abdominal muscles. This allows your abs to get a great overall workout as they go through each repetition.

This increased range of motion also transfers nicely to sport movements like tennis serves and volleyball spikes – both of which require power development through a large range of motion through the shoulder and hip joints (ie. the core).

3. A fun challenge! Ab workouts on the stability ball are fun, different, and very challenging compared to your plain old boring sit ups and crunches on the floor.

To give you an example, you can try this stability abdominal workout and experience the difference first hand:
